Champ immobilization system

The Champ Traction-Splint by Kartsana is used in emergency medicine for pelvic and leg fractures. The hip belt is removable and can therefore also be used separately.

In the case of complex leg fractures, the leg must be stabilized and placed under traction directly at the accident scene to enable gentle patient transport. For this purpose, we developed a telescopic splint that can be secured to the leg using TPE pads. The telescopic splint has a sufficiently wide adjustment range to accommodate different body sizes and leg shapes.

A rotary mechanism developed and patented by us allows the two rails to move relative to each other, applying traction to the leg.

Functionality, ergonomics and manufacturability

Function

This splint had a number of application-specific requirements regarding its operation. To allow paramedics at the accident scene to adjust the length as quickly as possible, a coarse adjustment was required. After the coarse adjustment, the device also had to provide fine adjustment so that the fractured leg could be placed under traction and the patient could then be transported.

It was also important that the tension applied to the leg by the system could be released gradually when removing the splint.

Based on this challenge, ID DESIGN developed a now-patented rotary mechanism that meets all of these requirements. Ease of use and technical feasibility were the primary priorities throughout the development.

ID DESIGN was responsible for complete manufacturing support for this project. In close cooperation with toolmakers and suppliers, all components of the assembly were brought to series-production readiness.
