Passenger Information Display

In close cooperation with Funkwerk Systems, an extensive standard portfolio ofpassenger information displaysfor local public transport and long-distance passenger transport was created.

The aim of the project was to create a system that was as modular, cost-effective and visually appealing as possible while meeting all requirements for modernreal-time public transport displays.

ID DESIGN was involved in this project from the early analysis and research phase. Starting from a highly theoretical approach, the development objective was continuously refined throughout the project in close coordination with Funkwerk.
Later in the project, ID DESIGN was also responsible for engineering trade-fair prototypes and preparing the entire product portfolio from an engineering perspective.

Concept
 

During an extensive concept phase, based on the research and analysis results,a deliberately abstract approach was initially chosen to further define the project objective.
The key challenge was to engage with technical, logistical and engineering details in considerable depth at a very early stage in order to identify modular relationships and create realistic concept proposals.


By the end of the concept phase, extensive exchange with various departments at Funkwerk had resulted in a comprehensive and coherent system of modular passenger information displays.

The resulting selection of products and mounting solutions then formed the basis for the design phase.

Design
 

During the design phase, the resultsfrom the concept phase were developed further and translated into concrete designs. Based on the modular relationships and the defined passenger-information display system, detailed design proposals were developed and evaluated.

Technical feasibility was an important aspect when developing the designs. It had to be ensured that the designs were not only aesthetically appealing, but also technically feasible and economically viable.

Due to the full-scale dimensions of the displays, the design concepts were reviewed at 1:1 scale using a virtual-reality headset during the design phase. This allowed the designs to be experienced virtually and evaluated on a sound basis.

Prototyping

To present the design concepts to the public at InnoTrans 2022, ID DESIGN engineered two prototypes.

The two prototypes were built based on the specifications developed during the design phase and were fully functional. They were used to present the concepts to the public and collect feedback from potential customers.

Funkwerk used feedback from trade-fair visitors to identify potential improvements and adaptations to the passenger information displays.

Customization

To provide customers with a customization option, the housing was designed to accept optional colored side panels.

The side panels were integrated as an additional feature into the passenger information displays, giving customers the option to adapt the displays to their corporate identity or aesthetic preferences.

Mechanical Engineering

ID DESIGN was responsible for preparing all displays and mounting systems from an engineering perspective and alldetails were defined to the point where all technical boundary conditions, installation spaces, interface situations and product functions were clarified as completely as possible.

ID DESIGN then worked in close coordination with the manufacturers, who ultimately translated the engineering designs into sheet-metal developments and welded assemblies.
